Our visitors, Punjab United:
The Gravesend based community club were formed in 2003 as a Sunday football team, initially competing in the North Kent Sunday League. They had plenty of success and eventually made the transition to Saturday football and joined the Kent County Football League in 2016. Their stay was short, because after becoming league champions, their application for promotion to the SCEFL Division One at Step 6 was accepted. They were then immediately promoted again so, after a lot of work off the pitch, were able to take their place in the Premier Division for the 2018-19 season and they have remained there until now. In the 2022-23 season, they won the Kent Senior Trophy, beating Deal Town 6-1 in the final.
Their home ground at the Elite Venue in Gravesend was renamed “The Steve Cook Stadium” as a tribute to their late groundsman who did so much to help them maintain and develop the ground until his death in 2020.
They are managed by Jugjit “Chipie” Sian, who is also the club chairman.
Last season Punjab finished in 9th place with 65 points, 8 points behind Whitstable. This time around, they have had a great unbeaten start, winning six and drawing four of their first ten games to sit in second place. Whitstable have had a very mixed start to their campaign, winning four, drawing two and losing five games so far.
The teams first met in the 2022-23 season and Whitstable have not yet achieved a win, the previous scores being as follows:
2022-23
Whitstable 1 Punjab 2
Punjab 0 Whitstable 0
2023-24
Punjab 4 Whitstable 2
Whitstable 1 Punjab 1
Saturday is of course also a special day at the Primcura Healthcare Stadium as all at Whitstable Town Football Club remember our friend Matt Milne who sadly passed away one year ago and we will be raising money for charity in his name.
