SNODLAND TOWN 1 WHITSTABLE TOWN 1
SCEFL Premier Division
Saturday March 8 2025 15.00
Snodland and Whitstable had to settle for a point each after battling to a 1-1 draw in a game that lacked much entertainment on a poor pitch. A good crowd spent much of the afternoon scanning the sunny sky as the ball was lofted from end to end. A rare moment of quality gave Snodland the lead in the second half when Kane Phillip found the top corner from 18 yards. Whitstable spent the rest of the game camped in the Snodland half and Finn O'Mara fired in an equaliser following one of numerous late corner kicks, but the home team managed to see out the remaining time to halt Whitstable's sequence of wins.
The teams had met less than a month earlier when Whitstable won 3-1 and since then Snodland had played five matches, all away from home, losing four and drawing one. In that time Whitstable had won all four of their games, in cup and league. The crowded schedule ahead meant the Whitstable team was refreshed once more with Bradley Schafer and Will Thomas returning to the starting eleven in place of Fin Cotton and the injured Jayden Boulton. The attendance of 289 included good support for both teams on a mild and sunny afternoon. Despite the car park being wet and muddy, the sloping grass pitch had dried out and was quite hard and uneven.
There was an early chance for Whitstable when a build-up on the left gave Jake McIntyre the chance to send over a cross that was fired over the top at the back post by Dean Grant. Snodland replied when T'aizo Dilaver's low shot was collected by Dan Colmer following a right wing cross from Kayden Turner. In the 17th minute, Turner lobbed the ball forward and as it bounced up, Delaver hit a dipping shot from 25 yards that was well saved by Colmer who tipped the ball over the bar. Nathan Jeche chased the ball into the box and got between two defenders, but shot over.
On 36 minutes, Colmer launched a huge free kick into the opposite penalty area and although a Snodland head was first to the ball it was diverted towards the top corner of the net and goalkeeper Joshua Fowler had to be alert to push it behind for a corner. Schafer tried a shot from outside the box and Fowler got down to his left to push the ball around the post, and then from the resulting corner, O'Mara headed wide at the back post. The last few minutes passed without incident and an ordinary half ended goalless.
The first few minutes of the second half saw plenty of corners. Snodland had the first two and then Whitstable won four in the space of a few minutes, but neither team could make them count. With just over an hour played, both managers made a change and Ashdon Day replaced Ronald Sithole for Whitstable, with Ryan Thompson taking the place of Kayden Turner for Snodland. In the 62nd minute, Connor Wilkins won possession 20 yards from goal but his low shot was comfortably saved by Fowler. In the 70th minute, Jeche outmuscled two defenders to get himself clear on goal, only to blaze his shot just high and wide when he looked odds on to score.
Snodland took the lead in the 73rd minute after making progress down the right where Aidan Clark sent over a deep cross that was collected by Kane Phillip who cut back into the middle before finding the top left corner from 18 yards. The home goalkeeper then went down for treatment for the first of several lengthy delays and Whitstable introduced Robbie Rees. An 81st minute corner brought Whitstable level after Schafer's delivery was pushed out by Fowler, Day headed it back towards goal and although it was cleared off the line, the impressive O'Mara was there to power the ball into the net. Whitstable then went looking for the winner as Schafer’s effort struck a defender and a succession of corners and long throws followed. Jeche had a header cleared off the line and Fowler got down to save a Thomas header as Snodland defended desperately. Their manager was shown a yellow card for dissent during the twelve added minutes, but they hung on to claim a point.
The hunt for league points continues on Tuesday evening when Whitstable are back at home to play Lordswood, the only team in the division that they have yet to meet this season.
